Direct to Garment (DTG) and Direct to Film (DTF) have similar histories and similar pathways and indeed seem very much alike in many ways. Both textile processes as we know them today were founded around inkjet printers beginning in the late 1950’s through the 1990’s, and until each process was able to pioneer their respective textile system, they were modifying inkjet printers. When in doubt embroider it out

One of the oldest forms of textile art, embroidery, has origins spanning across many cultures over thousands of years. The first hand embroidery machine was made in 1846, before even the first sewing machine! A little over 100 years later Shilling Sales budded in 1949. Shilling Sales began in promotional product sales just before the resurgence of the home embroidery machine. In 1994 we became a full-service embroidery business that does our own digitizing and production. Here are some examples of our personal works of artistry, all done on our in-house machines.

Ink it out and screen it in

Starting during the Song Dynasty in China around 960-1279 CE, Screen printing, originally called silk screening due to the silk used for the screen, has gone through many changes and seen a beautiful landscape of artistry. Fast-forward to Andy Warhol in the 1960’s and, in conjunction with Michael Vasilantone’s invention of the first multi-color garment screen printing machine, we saw an explosion of this wonderful medium that is still felt today.
